What a great night it was to walk last night! The cool air (ok it was a bit warm), the cloud cover, and the slight sprinking of rain made for a excellent walk.

Trail
Last night we walked the Riverton 123rd (12300 South) Jordan River Parkway trail. We took an unexpected turn across the river and up the west side of the river. The path ultimately lead into a neighborhood, but we had a great walk anyways!
Here are some details about the path we took this week:
- Elevation change: N/A (we didn’t record it this week)
- Distance: 2.2* miles!
- Time: 1 hour*
The trail was very quiet, not many other people at all. We did encounter a cyclist and a couple walkers/joggers. Mostly we interacted with nature. Bonnie Lee was able to identify Red-winged Blackbirds. Good job Bonnie Lee! We saw ducks, geese, horses, dogs, cats, and plenty of gnats, and a single mule.
We stopped to pet the horses and mule, and they seemed to enjoy the moment as much as we did.
Unexpected Highlights
While walking down the path we came across a few things we hadn’t expected. The first (or last if you were Bonnie Lee) was a water pumping station for Riverton Water Works. It was a red brick building just sitting next to the river, making whirring noises.

Further down the trail we came upon two structures that jutted out into the “water” and reeds. They were observation decks! The first had a small gazebo, and the second just a place to stand to watch ducks and other water fowl nest and live. Each was surrounded by nesting beds and a few feeding boxes.
Return Trip
Because we walked down the path that ultimately ended in a neighborhood we are doing it again! Well.. the east side of the river this time. We are meeting Thursday May 24th at 6pm at the same take off point the Jordan River Parkway trail head on 12300 South. See map below for location. If you need I can tell you more details on how to get there.
